The Marshmallow Experiment [LXXXVI]
Or… Children and psychology and the truth of nothingness
Soft And Squishy
You may have heard of an experiment that was run:
“A child was left in a room with a marshmallow and was told that if they could wait for a bit — then they would get a second one when the reseacher returned.”
The outcome:
“Those that waited for the second one, rather than eating the one in front of them were found to be more successful in life.”
The only problem with this experiment — is that it cannot be replicated —even though a lot of people have tried.
The other point was that this was reported by the media somewhat along the lines of how I have done it — but the experiment was a little bit more nuanced.
But nobody wants to know that — we can just trot the psychobabble story out with our dinner guests and look as though we know a lot about child psychology.
