The Best Interview Question That I Was Ever Asked [XXVI]
Or… At least the most memorable, and for me the most thought-provoking.
An Innocuous Question
I was a web developer back in the day, I went for a job interview and one of the many questions was:
“What happens when you click a mouse button?”
It seems innocuous at first — these are the subjects that you could have answered about (plus probably more that I haven’t thought about).
- Physics of the plastic moving
- The electronics—mechanical switch closes a circuit to send an electrical signal
- The internal buffer that the mouse has
- The USB (or Bluetooth) protocol
- Interrupts the operating system
- Message protocols from OS to application
Then you get to the web side of it
- CSS
- JavaScript
- Browser
- Rendering systems
I still think about this question today — and it was a very long time ago when I was asked this (I did get the job, so they liked my answer).
