An Innocuous Question

I was a web developer back in the day, I went for a job interview and one of the many questions was:

“What happens when you click a mouse button?”

It seems innocuous at first — these are the subjects that you could have answered about (plus probably more that I haven’t thought about).

• Physics of the plastic moving
• The electronics—mechanical switch closes a circuit to send an electrical signal
• The internal buffer that the mouse has
• The USB (or Bluetooth) protocol
• Interrupts the operating system
• Message protocols from OS to application

Then you get to the web side of it

• CSS
• JavaScript
• Browser
• Rendering systems

I still think about this question today — and it was a very long time ago when I was asked this (I did get the job, so they liked my answer).
