Pornhub’s Billion Dollar Problem [XIII]
Or… Why perhaps ‘social media’ is not a viable business model
Profiting Off People
Visa was named in a lawsuit filed in California federal court accusing Pornhub’s parent company, MindGeek, of profiting off of child pornography.
Pornhub
- has billions of views every year on its platform, from user-generated content
- claims “that it does everything possible to ensure that child pornography is not distributed through its platform”
- moderates content and allows users to flag inappropriate content (Let’s be honest — if you are into child pornography — you are not going to do this)
- will say ”the burden to check every single uploaded video would be financially unviable”
Paying people to moderate this sort of content is so expensive — financially, emotionally, and mentally (just imagine if moderators’ mental health was actually looked after).
Perhaps if you run a platform that is too expensive to ensure that it operates within the bounds of legality — there is no business model there.
