Kids And The Awareness Of Transgender Issues
Or… A small anecdote from an unlikely source which shows that children are already familiar with societal issues
Who Can Answer This Question?
A married, woman teacher started a new class with new students.
As has been the tradition throughout history, she wrote her name on the board as an introduction as to who she was. She wrote this:
Ms. Branch
And then she asked the question:
“Why do you think that I put Ms, rather than Miss, or Mrs?”
To which, multiple hands went up, all straining to reach as high as they could. This is how the conversation went:
Student 1: Because you are not married?
Teacher: No, I am married.
Student 2: Is it because you are divorced?
Teacher: No, I am still married.
Student 3: Are you married to another woman
Teacher: No, I am married to a man.
Student 3: Is your husband dead?
Teacher: No, my husband is still alive.
The children couldn’t quite work out what it was. So my friend explained that she was happily married, to a man, who is still alive.
