Innocent By Association [XXXVIII]
Or… Why I am tired of men saying that they have close women associates, and by implication, they aren’t as bad as other men.
Associates
Whenever there is sexism, misogyny, or an attack on women:
You will hear men say:
“Well, I have a wife, a daughter, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a woman friend — blah, blah, blah”
As though, because they have women in their lives, somehow they have more empathy, or aren’t as bad as other men, or can understand more.
The undertone here is “I would never do that, I have many women in my life, so therefore I respect women.”
It is as though they are using the old cliche:
“Some of my best friend’s are women.”
Rather than trying to increase your credibility through association, how about men start acting as though they care enough about women to start doing something?
How about using this phrase?
“I am a human being, and as a human being…
