Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in early August.
Nobody seems to know why she visited.
- The President advised against it.
- The Pentagon advised against it.
- It alarmed both South Korea and Japan.
- It goaded North Korea and China.
China has never recognised Taiwan as a separate country and most certainly does not recognise Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen.
So her meeting with him, it showed American support for Taiwan being a legitimate country.
She could claim that she stood up for the Taiwanese people and global democracy against the oppressive authoritarianism of China.
But why?
They are either seen as an independent nation, or they are not. Making these sorts of meetings leans towards them being seen as an independent nation.
If they are independent — then they should be part of the World Health Organisation.
