How I Give Feedback [CIII]

I am in IT Consulting and, as part of that, I give a lot of feedback to people.

There are many times at which I give feedback, today I am focussing on presentation feedback.

Every time someone does a presentation, I take notes on feedback, both on the content and their presenting skills.

At the end of the presentation, I ask the people whether they would like some feedback —the majority ask for feedback, and some don’t.

Here is the sequence of events:

1. Take feedback throughout the presentation.
2. Ask the question: “Would anyone like feedback?”
3. If anyone says yes, ask the question “Now in front of everyone, or in private later?”
4. When giving the feedback ask: “How do you like the feedback given?”
5. Provide the feedback.

When asked the question in point 4 — everybody, and I mean everybody has said to me something along the lines of:

“Don’t sugar coat it, just give it to me straight.”
