Word Play
To keep the brain supple as people descend into old age, studies have shown that you should do both a mathematically inclined challenge and a language inclined challenge.
Consequently, almost every day I do the Sudoku and a crossword (My sudoku of choice is through the NY Times) and I also do the mini crossword. The mini crossword isn’t a challenge, so I also choose to print out a cryptic crossword as well via the Evening Standard. Besides I love paper.
In standard crosswords, if you don’t know the answer to the question —bad luck. Cryptic crosswords give you the answer in the clue. It just takes brain power to sort it out.
Here is a clue and answer that I thought was extremely clever:
What the fishwife may have on hand?
Solution:
HERRING
As in ‘Her Ring’.
Now that is the sort of wordplay I enjoy.
