Acting With Empathy In The Unknown [XXXI]
Or… How to approach the unknown things in society
Society Changes Faster Than I Can Keep Up
What is socially acceptible, what the norms are, and how they are implemented change rapidly.
I have vivid memories of things that I have said which I now look back on and know how inappropriate they would be (either at the time or nowadays). Thankfully none that I am aware of were recorded or put on the internet.
I recently got some advice on how I should approach some of the more challenging ideas that I come across. They are challenging to my belief system, rather than whether they are true.
I have taken this advice to heart.
Whenever I encounter an idea, a social norm, something that is new or challenging to my current (possibly outdated) way of thinking, I now think:
“How can I react with empathy to this situation”
Rather than rely on the current status quo.
